Demo site — not a real clinic. Anupana is a fictional business.

Ayurveda, described plainly.

An anupana is the carrier — the water, milk or ghee that a preparation is taken with. We describe our therapies the same way: what they are, what they involve, and nothing further.

The practice

Description before anything else.

Ayurveda is a system of description — of constitution, of season, of the order of a day. A consultation here begins with that description and stays inside it.

You will not find claims about outcomes on this site. What we can tell you is what a therapy consists of, how long it takes, and what it is like to be in the room while it happens.

Therapies

Six procedures, described as procedures.

  1. 01

    Abhyanga

Warm, herb-infused oil applied over the whole body in long strokes along the limbs and circular strokes at the joints. Performed on a wooden table, usually by two therapists working in time with one another.

  2. 02

    Shirodhara

A continuous thread of warm liquid — oil, milk or a decoction — poured onto the forehead from a suspended vessel, kept moving slowly across the brow for the length of the session.

  3. 03

    Udvartana

A dry or semi-dry paste of milled grain and herbs, worked over the body in upward strokes, against the lie of the hair.

  4. 04

    Nasya

Preparations administered through the nostrils, preceded by steam and a short massage of the face, neck and shoulders.

  5. 05

    Kizhi

Cloth boluses packed with herbs, rice or warmed sand, pressed and drawn across the body in a set rhythm. Also called pinda sweda.

  6. 06

    Panchakarma

A sequence of five procedures undertaken over a set number of days, with a preparatory period before it and a regulated diet after.

The word names a measure of life — what suits it, what does not, and how long it runs.

A paraphrase of the definition given in the Charaka Samhita. Not a quotation.

The rooms

Six treatment rooms. Each has a single wooden table, a tiled floor laid to drain, and a window that opens. Oils are warmed in the room rather than carried to it.

Between appointments the rooms are stripped and aired, which is why we schedule fewer of them in a day than the space would allow.
